The Double Journey / Το Δίπλο Ταξίδι, Ritsos, Parodos #90
The Double Journey
From one train to the other: years and years. He sakes a seat
near the window. He sees fleeing backward:
trees, hotels, chimneys, monuments. He discerns,
right behind the things that flee, what remains:
what he would call entirely his own, if it were not also ours—
as behind the window is the curtain, behind the curtain
is the house. inside the house is the handsome woman.
She dusts carefully with her handkerchief the other pane
on the photograph of her mother. There inside it, the old lady
shyly holds her two hands one over the other,
as if she still had a fever and secretly took her pulse.
