Inversion / Αντιμετάθεση, Ritsos, Parodos #34

Inversion

In the evening the rooms fill with the withered fur
of an invisible aged animal moulting. The little coffeehouse
across the way lights its lamps, and so with its chairs
and its five tables passes into the dream. A dog
sleeps under one table—somewhere it trusts
and so it sleeps. And so, in the lithograph on the wall,
the courteous handshake of the two swordsmen now looks
less studied, expounding more exactly
the distant, pained nausea of the woman in the second picture.

Athens, 31.XII.71

It’s like practicing your daily
daily scales, and halfway down
letting one note sing
while you ask the other fingers
what they think.
