Surfaces

Great light in abrupt lines.
The mountains are black at midday.
The smoke between two statues.
They’re unloading the truck at the harbor.
The fish come there from far away; they stare
at the restaurants’ placards. The chairs
line up along the wall. The woman
sits in the third chair alone,
waits her turn. The barbed wire
is in the springs of the beds; it doesn’t show.
It’s in the springs of the great, ancient sofa
they’ve dragged out under the trees
for children and wayfarers to sit on,
staring at their shoes and the ants.

Samos, 19.XII.71

It’s like practicing your daily
daily scales, and halfway down
letting one note sing
while you ask the other fingers
what they think.
